Read 2 Chronicles chapter 25 verses 1-10 when you have time. This is glimpse into how God moves.
To summarize, King Amaziah takes the throne of Judah at the age of 25. He did right by the Lord but not with his whole heart. He avenged his fathers death, and set about assembling an army. He had 300,000 soldiers at the ready, but decided to hire 100,000 soldiers from Israel. Even though they were related to Judah, the nation was split into two, and they no longer worshipped together.
In verse 7, we see that the seer (a type of prophet) comes to Amaziah and tells him that if he uses those extra 100,000 soldiers he bought from Israel, he would lose the battle. He would have the numbers, but not the Lord on his side.
Amaziah listened, but his mind went straight to the money he had spent. How would he get the money back if he sent them back home? The end of verse 9 is the key. The seer says, “the Lord has much more to give you than this”. Think about that. Would you choose to have people around you because you paid them versus the Lord, and those who serve him?
Amaziah made the right choice and dismissed the 100,000 but you need to know that they were not happy. Though they got paid, they were counting on getting the spoils of war to add to their pockets. They wanted the Lords money, the peoples money and whatever else they could take away. I’m not saying they were gold diggers, but…….By the way, Amaziah won that battle, but he began to worship another God. This reflects his half-hearted faith in verse 2.
Have you ever chosen to trust in the Lord as opposed to someone else? Have you had someone become angry because you did not rely on their help for your success? Is God enough for you?
